Magnetometer Recalibration

Ruby's 3D magnetometer will usually retain good calibration for the life of the product. Recalibration is rarely necessary.

Perform this procedure only if you're directed by uThere support.

This will only take a few minutes.

The procedure:

First, be sure that there are no ferrous or magnetic items in the airframe near the airspeed / magnetometer sensor. A steel screw, control rod, or servo less than an inch away or a canopy latch magnet less than a foot away will both produce an unacceptable level of distortion. You might use a hand compass to scan the area around the sensor on the airframe.

You'll need to tell Ruby to record extra information to SD Flash that can be used for configuration of the magnetometer:

Insert the SD Flash chp into your PC and open the "ruby" directory.

Move the existing ".utms" file outside of the "ruby" directory temporarily.

Replace it with the file "calibration_data_recording_settings.utms" (click to download).

Insert the SD Flash chip back into the Ruby Expander

Now, take your plane with Ruby mounted outside away from large ferrous items (i.e. 20 feet from automobile). Be sure you aren't wearing a steel watch or jewelry.

Throughout this entire ritual you will hold plane by the nose, with tail pointed away from you.

  1. With plane "right side up" (top of plane facing up), face towards magnetic north and hold plane by nose with tail pointed to magnetic north.
( Up to about +-20 degrees error is allowed, but preferably you'll have a compass.)
  2. Keeping the wings level and yourself facing north, dip the tail so that the tail is pointed straight down / nose pointed straight up.
  3. Smoothly raise the tail until the tail is pointed straight up / nose is pointed straight down.
  4. Face magnetic west, with tail of plane pointed to magnetic west.
  5. Keeping the fuselage parallel to the ground, slowly rotate the plane so that one wing is pointed straight up, then smoothly rotate until the other wing is pointed straight up.
  6. Face magnetic south, with tail of plane pointed to magnetic south.
  7. Keeping the wings level and yourself facing south, dip the tail so that the tail is pointed straight down / nose pointed straight up.
  8. Smoothly raise the tail until it the tail is pointed straight up / nose is pointed straight down.
  9. Flip the plane upside down and repeat steps 4 through 8

Send the data.utd file that was generated during this ritual to support@uthere.com

You'll soon receive an updated configuration file containing new calibration data. Remove any existing ".utcfg" file from the "ruby" directory and drop in the new .utcfg file that you receive from us..

Remove the "calibration_data_recording_settings.utms" file and put the original .utms file back in the "ruby" directory.
